This is from a poem of the Swedish playwright, novelist and essayist August Strindberg (1849-1912).
He fled from devastation
and steered his steps down to
the boat. Footprints in the sand !
He cursed and wanted to flee, but
then he noticed that he was cursing
himself and then he under-
stood why the gulls and the viper
and the others fled, and he trod
again in his own tracks, for surely
he couldn't flee from himself.
